The Evolving Chinese Dress, 1909-1973: Cheongsam/Qipao

Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m.

This garment presentation examines the fashion trends from China to other transnational communities dating from 1909 to 1973. There will be examples of a “Pleated Skirt, "Glossy Cloth” also known as Bi-colored Silk, Qipao aka Cheong Sam, knotted floral buttons and polychrome silk embroidery. We will examine the fashion and historical context that reflected a restricted lifestyle to a liberated one for Chinese women. We will also examine various fabric and tailoring details.

This a PowerPoint presentation and will include a sampling of the actual garments.

Presenter Jeanie Low is an award-winning quilt artist living in San Francisco and is a member of the San Francisco Quilters’ Guild, Textile Arts Council and Ethnics Textile Study Group.
